On Sunday the 3rd of September,2023 in the midmorning hours, police controllably detonated a bomb that was brought to the premises at Miracle Center Cathedral led by Pastor Robert Kayanja, with the intention of the suspect to blow himself causing much damage to the congregants.
“Our technology confirmed that there was an improvised Explosive Device(IED) in the bag,” Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson- Patrick Onyango.
A 28 year old suspect suicide bomber identified as Ibrahim Kintu has been put into police custody and is said to be helping police in finding other bombs and targets. The Uganda Police have intelligence that there are at least 3 other explosives in the hands of terrorists on a mission to harm worshippers.
“We interacted with him and he said they sent them with four bombs. He is in our custody, facing charges related to terrorism,” Onyango Patrick said on Sunday.
The suspect concealed the identity of the bomb, ” they had put powder which if you’re checking, you’d think it was rice or posho and then easily allow him to enter it. We’re still trying to look for the sim card which might have gotten lost during the controlled detonation”, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokes person.
“We are trying to analyze what was in the IED. It was a food flask, and they used nails, a detonator, a battery of a motorcycle which was the charger and a phone which was supposed to be the switch”, he added.
Police has warned the public that terrorists want to hit Uganda and encouraged the public to generally be careful. Early in July, The United Kingdom also sent a warning to Uganda of a possible terrorist attack.
