East African Community, a seven nation community announced peace talks for DR. Congo to be held in Nairobi on 21 November, 2022.
The talks were said to be held with the aim of restoring peace in Eastern Congo where the M23 rebels had just clashed with troops causing deaths on both the army and rebels. The announcement came as the Congolese troops clashed with the rebels anew.
The M23 rebels came to prominence in 2012, taking arms again in 2021 blaming the Congo government for failing to fulfill their promise of getting them into the army among other grievances.
Insurgency of the M23 rebels has been most recently across the DRC’s North Kivu province, taking over a string of land that belongs to the region against the army in multiple victories.
