The recently celebrated World Fisheries Day brought the prime minister Hon. Nabbanja and State minister for fisheries Helen Adoa to Serere district where the day’s celebrations for Uganda took place.
Under the theme: “Promoting Fish Farming for improved household incomes”, the president pledged to support aquaculture and to continue engaging fishing communities on better fishing methods and ensure sustainable use of water bodies.
According to the his speech as delivered by the prime minister -the president reported that Uganda produces 570.000 metric tones of fish annually of which 120.000 tones come from fish farming that earns the country to shs 800b.
Adoa Helen – the State Minister for Fisheries encouraged the community that increased production and consumption of fish products has a critical contribution to food security, nutrition and economic growth. “The World Fisheries Day reminds the world of environmental sustainability adaptation , climate change and pollution mitigation” – she added.
