Parliament of Uganda amidst skyrocketing food prices and cries of many Ugandans unable to sustain life, has confirmed 193 billion shillings budgetary allocation to increase allowances for members of parliament in the coming financial year, 2022/2023 starting this July.

Chris Obore, Director for Communications and Public Affairs at parliament explains that the increment was informed by the huge financial pressure the MPs are facing.

Parliamentary commission chaired by Anita Among, the speaker of parliament is said to have considered increment of either salaries or allowances come July, 2022, earlier on.

The reasons given are also the skyrocketing commodity prices and cost of living which is said to have affected legislators, some rumored to having taken loans to support their financially strained constituencies.

The 11th parliament has 555 MPs; basic salary of a Ugandan MP is 11m every month. 10 -30m as mileage allowance depending on where the MP comes from.

Representatives of special groups like youth even earn more since they manage larger constituencies.

This allowance increment for MPs comes amidst cries from health workers like ; midwives and nurses, science teachers for salary increment, which is also scheduled for the new financial year, 2022/2023.
