Nurses and midwives strike bites hard in many government hospitals as patients are left stranded with no one to offer treatment as nurses and midwives put their tools down protesting against low pay midweek.
Government has however ordered the health workers to return to work. Dr. Baryomunsi – minister for ICT thinks the strike wasn’t called for since different parties in the health sector were considered under plans in the national budget to have their remuneration increased.
He calls the nurses and midwives to halt their industrial action as government gets set to increase their salaries.
Justus Cherop – President of Uganda Nurses and midwives Union(UNMU) in response to this has ordered all it’s members to resume work so as to reduce the effect in hospitals caused by these strikes.
Many other members of this body disagree accusing their president of accepting a bribe this still continuing with the industrial action..
The nurses strike has been suspended for 90 days.
