There is never a dull day in the far north eastern part of Uganda, even though the land
bleeds from the burns of the scotching rays of sunlight, the people still resilient as ever
wear the emblems of their culture with pride as they traverse the far stretched plains.

Since the year 2014, Karimojong have come together in a cultural event meant to
showcase the Karamoja Sub region regalia and norms. The event brings together all the
people from the nine districts in the Karimojong Subregion namely; Moroto, Abim,
Nakapiripirit, Nabilakuti, Amudat, Kotido, Kaabong, Karenga and Napak.

The event also attracts participants from Teso, Lango, Turkana, South Sudan and
Ethiopia who share similar historical backgrounds as Ateker.
Representing the United Kingdom Karamoja community, Eng. Teddy Curram showed up
in her traditional Karimajong attire ready to stomp the grounds in Matany town council,
Napak district.
“As a heritage practitioner and charity enthusiast, the event is a great platform to
interact with collaborative contacts for charity work and also to learn about the Karamoja
communities and cultures.” Says Mrs. Curram.
Mrs. Teddy Curram is an engineer, human rights advocate and philanthropist who traces
her roots from the land of Karamoja.
“I used the event as an opportunity to meet the beneficiaries who benefited from the
donation of sanitary pads my charity organization championed early this year.” She
adds.

Teddy was accompanied by her fellow human rights advocate and member of AIDO
Network International Mrs. Elizabeth Ngare from Kenya.
The week-long event was highlighted by the launch of the building of a mass grave
monument where Karimojong were killed during President Idi Amin’s regime while
resisting modern clothing and preferring their traditional attire and regalia.
